How to Add MX Record Entries in cPanel for Google Workspace: A Step-by-Step Guide

Want to get your Google Workspace email working smoothly with your domain?

You’re in the right place. This guide will walk you through adding MX record entries in cPanel — and yes, it’s easier than it sounds.

Google Workspace Different?

What Are MX Records and Why Do You Need Them?

MX (Mail Exchange) records are DNS entries that tell the internet where to deliver your email. When someone emails your address (e.g., yourname@yourbusiness.com), MX records ensure the message lands in your Google Workspace inbox — not lost in cyberspace.

MX Record Setup for Google Workspace

MX Record Setup for Google Workspace (2023 and Beyond)

Good news: If you signed up after April 2023, you only need one MX record. For older accounts, you’ll need to add five.

🔹 For New Accounts (2023+):
  • Priority: 1

  • Mail Server: smtp.google.com

🔹 For Older Accounts:

You’ll need to enter the following five MX records with varying priorities. You can find them on Google’s official support page.

Step-by-Step Guide: Add MX Records in cPanel
1
Log into cPanel
Visit yourdomain.com/cpanel, enter your login credentials. Need help? Your hosting provider can assist.
2
Open Zone Editor
In the Domains section, click on Zone Editor to manage DNS records.
3
Select Your Domain
Click Manage next to the domain you want to configure. Tip: Take a screenshot of current DNS settings as a backup.
4
Remove Old MX Records
Filter DNS by “MX” and delete any existing records to avoid conflicts.
5
Add Google MX Record
Click Add Record → MX Record and fill in:
Name/Host: @ or leave blank
Priority: 1
Destination: smtp.google.com
TTL: 3600 (or default)
Older accounts will need to add all five records individually.
6
Set Email Routing to Remote
Back in the cPanel main menu, open Email Routing and set it to Remote Mail Exchanger.
7
Activate Gmail in Google Admin Console
Sign in to admin.google.com → Navigate to Apps → Google Workspace → Gmail → Click Activate Gmail and follow prompts.

How Long Does It Take?

Changes can take up to 72 hours to propagate. Usually, it’s faster (within 24 hours). It’s normal if only some users see updates initially — DNS just takes time.
Troubleshooting Tips
Still not working after 72 hours?
✔️ Verify MX entries are correct
✔️ Confirm Remote Mail Exchanger is selected
✔️ Check domain ownership in Admin Console
Bounce-back errors?
⏳ Likely a propagation delay — give it more time.
Add SPF for Extra Security
Consider adding this TXT record to protect your domain from spoofing:
Type: TXT
Name: @
Value: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all
